Chapter 3: A Different Time

Jimmy Larson blinked rapidly, his vision blurring as the shimmering portal of light dissipated around him. The familiar hum of his corporate office was gone, replaced by the cacophony of youthful voices and the unmistakable scent of freshly cut grass. As his eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight, he found himself standing on a bustling college campus, a sea of young faces surrounding him.

Disoriented and confused, Jimmy stumbled forward, his mind reeling from the sudden shift in time and place. He glanced down at his hands, noticing they were still those of his 48-year-old self, complete with the faint wrinkles and calluses earned over decades of corporate drudgery. Yet, the world around him was unmistakably that of his past.

“2023,” he muttered to himself, recognizing the familiar layout of his alma mater. “How is this possible?”

As he navigated through the throng of students, Jimmy’s attention was drawn to a group gathered near a large oak tree. His breath caught in his throat as he recognized a familiar face among them – his own, thirty years younger.

There, lounging against the tree trunk with an air of carefree confidence, was 18-year-old Jimmy Larson. His younger self was engaged in an animated discussion with friends, his eyes bright with the promise of endless possibilities.

Older Jimmy approached cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn’t help but marvel at the stark contrast between his younger self and the man he had become. Where the 18-year-old exuded energy and optimism, the 48-year-old felt weighed down by years of regret and missed opportunities.

As he drew closer, he caught snippets of their conversation.

“I’m telling you, guys,” Young Jimmy was saying, his voice filled with enthusiasm, “this tech internship is going to be my ticket to the big leagues. In a few years, I’ll be running my own company, mark my words!”

His friends laughed and cheered, clearly caught up in Young Jimmy’s infectious excitement. Older Jimmy felt a pang of nostalgia mixed with regret, remembering all too well the naive ambition of his youth.

“But what about that AI project Professor Simmons mentioned?” one of Young Jimmy’s friends asked. “Didn’t you say that sounded interesting?”

Young Jimmy waved his hand dismissively. “Sure, it’s cool and all, but where’s the money in that? The tech internship is where it’s at. Besides, AI is probably just a passing fad.”

Older Jimmy winced at his younger self’s words, knowing all too well how shortsighted that view would prove to be. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he was about to do. This was the pivotal moment he had traveled back in time for – the chance to guide his younger self towards a better future.

With trembling hands, Older Jimmy approached the group. “Excuse me,” he said, his voice wavering slightly. “I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation. Mind if I offer a different perspective?”

Young Jimmy looked up, his eyes narrowing as he took in the older man’s appearance. “Who are you?” he asked, a hint of suspicion in his voice.

Older Jimmy hesitated, knowing he couldn’t reveal his true identity without risking disbelief or worse. “I’m… a friend from the future,” he said, cringing inwardly at how ridiculous it sounded. “I know it sounds crazy, but I have some important information that could change your life.”

Young Jimmy’s friends exchanged bemused glances, but Young Jimmy himself leaned forward, intrigued despite his skepticism. “Alright, future man,” he said with a smirk. “What’s this important information you’ve got?”

Older Jimmy took a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. “That AI project your professor mentioned? It’s not just interesting – it’s revolutionary. In the coming years, artificial intelligence will reshape the entire technological landscape. The opportunities in that field will be limitless.”

Young Jimmy raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “And how would you know that? Got a crystal ball hidden somewhere?”

“Let’s just say I’ve seen what the future holds,” Older Jimmy replied, trying to keep his tone light despite the gravity of the situation. “That tech internship you’re considering? It’s a dead end. Sure, it might seem glamorous now, but in the long run, it’ll lead you down a path of unfulfillment and regret.”

Young Jimmy’s expression hardened, his earlier amusement replaced by defiance. “Look, I don’t know who you are or why you think you can just waltz up and start giving me life advice, but I’ve got my future all planned out. I don’t need some random old guy telling me what to do.”

Older Jimmy felt a flash of frustration, recognizing his own stubborn nature in his younger self. “I’m not trying to tell you what to do,” he said, struggling to keep his voice calm. “I’m just asking you to consider all your options before making a decision that will impact the rest of your life.”

“And why should I listen to you?” Young Jimmy challenged, rising to his feet. His friends watched the exchange with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

Older Jimmy sighed, running a hand through his graying hair. “Because I’ve been where you are,” he said softly. “I’ve made the choices you’re about to make, and I’ve lived with the consequences. I’m just trying to spare you from the same regrets.”

For a moment, something flickered in Young Jimmy’s eyes – a hint of uncertainty, perhaps even recognition. But it was quickly replaced by determination. “Thanks for the advice, old timer,” he said, his tone dismissive. “But I think I’ll stick to my own plan. Come on, guys,” he added, turning to his friends. “We’ve got a future to plan.”

As Young Jimmy and his friends walked away, Older Jimmy felt a wave of despair wash over him. He had traveled through time, defied the laws of nature, only to be dismissed by his own younger self. The weight of his regrets, momentarily lifted by the hope of changing his past, came crashing back down.

But as he watched his younger self disappear into the crowd, a new resolve began to form in Older Jimmy’s mind. He hadn’t come this far to give up after one failed attempt. If he couldn’t convince his younger self with words alone, he would have to find another way.

With renewed determination, Older Jimmy set off across the campus, his mind racing with possibilities. He may have been transported to a different time, but his knowledge of the future remained intact. There had to be a way to use that knowledge to guide his younger self towards a better path.

As he walked, Older Jimmy couldn’t help but marvel at the familiar sights and sounds of his college years. The old library where he had spent countless hours studying, the cafeteria where he had shared laughs with friends, the dormitory where he had dreamed of his future – all of it brought back a flood of memories, both bitter and sweet.

He paused in front of the computer science building, remembering the classes he had taken there. It was in one of those classrooms that Professor Simmons had first mentioned the AI project that Young Jimmy had so casually dismissed. Older Jimmy knew now that this project would go on to become one of the foundational works in the field of artificial intelligence, launching the careers of those students who had been wise enough to get involved.

An idea began to form in Older Jimmy’s mind. If he couldn’t convince his younger self directly, perhaps he could demonstrate the potential of AI in a way that even his stubborn 18-year-old self couldn’t ignore. But to do that, he would need access to the university’s computer labs and resources.

As he pondered his next move, a familiar voice called out from behind him. “Excuse me, sir? Are you looking for someone?”

Older Jimmy turned to find Professor Simmons herself standing there, looking exactly as he remembered her – brilliant, kind, and always ready to help a student in need. For a moment, he was transported back to his own college days, remembering the guidance and inspiration she had provided.

“Professor Simmons,” he said, unable to keep the emotion from his voice. “I… I’m not a student here, but I was hoping I might be able to use the computer lab for a special project. It’s related to artificial intelligence.”

The professor’s eyes lit up with interest. “Oh? Are you working in the field? We’re always excited to collaborate with industry professionals.”

Older Jimmy hesitated, then decided to take a risk. “You could say that. I’m working on a project that I believe could revolutionize the way we approach AI. But I need some help to get it off the ground.”

Professor Simmons studied him for a moment, then nodded. “Well, I’m always interested in new developments in AI. Why don’t you come to my office and we can discuss your project in more detail? If it’s as promising as you say, I’m sure we can arrange for you to use our facilities.”

As Older Jimmy followed Professor Simmons into the building, he felt a glimmer of hope. This was his chance to set things right, to create something that would not only change his own future but potentially impact the entire field of artificial intelligence.

He glanced back over his shoulder, catching a glimpse of Young Jimmy in the distance, still laughing with his friends, blissfully unaware of the choices that lay ahead. Older Jimmy squared his shoulders, a new sense of purpose filling him.

“I won’t waste this second chance,” he murmured to himself as he stepped into the computer science building. “This time, I’ll make the right choice – for both of us.”
